If you’re planning to start a family but the timing isn’t right, sperm freezing offers a way to safeguard your fertility for when you’re ready.
Sperm freezing is a process where sperm cells are preserved for future use. Using advanced cryopreservation techniques, sperm is stored in liquid nitrogen at -196°C, maintaining its quality for years.
Rainbow Fertility’s sperm freezing fees include 6 months’ complimentary storage.
Sperm freezing is a proactive choice for preserving fertility, especially if you are:
Sperm freezing can also be a convenient option if you’re participating in assisted reproductive treatment but will be away when your sample is needed.
The standard storage period for sperm is normally ten years. This period can be exceeded only in certain circumstances. Rainbow Fertility will be able to explain whether you can do this, and for how long you may be able to store your sperm. For more information, please visit our page: Eggs, sperm and embryos storage
Everyone’s situation is different. Most people freeze between two and five samples. Some individuals may choose to freeze more samples depending on their personal circumstances and medical conditions. In many cases, the time interval before surgery, hormone replacement therapy, chemotherapy or radiation therapy will be the deciding factor.
If you wish to use your frozen sperm sample, please inform your Rainbow Fertility specialist.
There are multiple fertility treatment options available, depending on factors such as sperm quality before and after freezing, as well as the number of samples stored. If you have a partner, they may also need to undergo basic fertility assessments as part of the process. In cases where post-thaw sperm quality is sufficient, frozen sperm can be used for donor insemination. However, if sperm quality is compromised due to illness or other factors, In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) or Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), which is a specialised form of IVF whereby individual sperm are injected directly into the eggs.
Your embryologist will assess the post-thaw quality of the sperm and share this information with your fertility specialist to help determine the most suitable treatment approach.
The following options are available if you decide to keep your sperm no longer cryopreserved:
Whatever option you decide on, signed consent forms are required. If this is something you are interested in, we recommend you get in touch with your clinic to discuss your options.
The cost of sperm freezing is $690. Our fees include 6 months’ complimentary storage for sperm.
Ongoing storage costs can be paid monthly via direct debit ($40/month). The storage fee applies regardless of the number of samples stored and is not refundable. Additional fees may apply if you require samples to be exported to another provider.
Please note the Australian Government is currently offering an Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) Storage Funding Program, which assists patients who face extra costs for fertility treatment because of cancer or a genetic condition. This program aims to remove out-of-pocket costs for eligible cryostorage services for these patients. Please contact our friendly team for further information about our current rates or how to claim the ART Storage Funding Program rebate. Call 1300 222 623 or email info@rainbowfertility.com.au.
PLEASE NOTE: All fertility preservation procedures are carried out at City Fertility in our RTAC (Reproductive Technology Accreditation Committee) accredited fertility clinics, where gametes (eggs/sperm) and embryos are also stored.
